Dogs often shake their heads, scratch their ears with their hind legs, or rub their heads against various surfaces because these tiny pests are causing them significant discomfort.

Don't just take my word for it—call your dog over and take a sniff of their ears. The smell can be unbearable, both fishy and foul. When you wipe their ears with a tissue, you'll likely find it comes away black and dirty. These tiny bugs are called ear mites.
